- O.E. salm, from L. psalmus, from Gk. psalmos "song sung to a harp," originally "performance on stringed instrument," from psallein "play on a stringed instrument, pull." Used in Septuagint for Heb. mizmor "song," especially the sort sung by David to the harp.
